This page explains how we test, evaluate, and rank accounting software. Our goal is to provide accurate, unbiased comparisons that help you make informed decisions. We update this methodology annually and note the last revision date at the bottom of this page.

Our Independence Policy

We do not accept payment from software vendors to influence rankings or reviews. We do not hide negative features or limitations in exchange for affiliate commissions.

Our revenue model relies on display advertising, not software referrals. This keeps our recommendations independent.

Software Selection Criteria

We review accounting platforms that meet these requirements:

We cover 16 tools across 9 business categories. We add new platforms when they gain significant market share or offer unique capabilities.

Our 6-Part Testing Framework

We evaluate every platform across 6 core dimensions. Each dimension receives equal weight in our overall assessment.

1. Pricing Transparency

We document all pricing tiers, hidden fees, and cost-per-user structures. We test actual checkout flows to confirm published prices.

We note additional costs for features like payroll, payment processing, and multi-user access. We calculate total cost of ownership for 3 common business scenarios.

2. Ease of Setup

We create new trial accounts and time the setup process. We evaluate onboarding tutorials, guided wizards, and help documentation.

We test how long it takes to connect a bank account, create an invoice, and generate a basic profit and loss report. We note whether the platform requires accounting knowledge to configure properly.

3. Feature Completeness

We verify that advertised features work as described. We test core accounting functions like invoicing, expense tracking, bank reconciliation, and financial reporting.

We document feature limitations, such as transaction caps, user limits, and integration restrictions. We compare features across pricing tiers to identify value gaps.

4. Customer Support Quality

We contact support through all available channels including email, phone, and live chat. We measure response times and resolution quality.

We ask both basic and complex questions to test knowledge depth. We review publicly available support resources like knowledge bases and video tutorials.

5. Integration Options

We test integrations with common business tools including payment processors, e-commerce platforms, and CRM systems. We document native integrations versus third-party connectors.

We verify data sync reliability and two-way update capabilities. We note integration costs and setup complexity.

6. User Interface Design

We evaluate navigation logic, mobile app functionality, and dashboard customization. We test the platform on desktop, tablet, and smartphone devices.

We assess whether critical functions require more than 3 clicks to access. We note accessibility features for users with disabilities.

How We Score and Rank

We assign each platform a score from 1 to 10 in each of the 6 testing dimensions. We calculate an overall score by averaging these 6 category scores.

We do not use overall scores to create universal rankings. Instead, we rank tools within specific use cases like freelancing, retail, or field service.

A platform that scores 9/10 for freelancers may score 5/10 for multi-location retail businesses. Context matters more than aggregate scores.

Our Update Schedule

We review pricing and feature changes quarterly. We conduct full re-tests of each platform annually.

Major updates like new pricing models or feature releases trigger immediate spot checks. We note the last update date on every review page.

User Feedback Integration

We collect feedback from business owners using the platforms we review. We verify complaints and praise through our own testing.

We do not alter scores based on individual complaints. We investigate patterns in user feedback and re-test specific features when multiple users report issues.

Our Team Qualifications

Our review team includes:
